“I have had the privilege to know Dean for almost 20 years and have been fortunate enough to train with him for many of them. During my 6 months preparation training before attending The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst back in 2002 I was lucky enough to train with Dean on a daily basis and found his enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge invaluable in my preparation for military training. His range of knowledge and experience across a diverse spectrum also enabled him to assist greatly in improving my strength and endurance training in preparation for a number of competitive Nordic skiing competitions and expeditions in France and Norway during my military career.”

“The Big Man – Total commitment, hard as nails, mad as a hatter, harshly honest, very proud, brilliant fun, amazing perseverance, would never be defeated, overcame everything, achieved the impossible time after time, totally reliable and a great friend.”

“It has been a privilege to know Dean in a professional capacity since 1998, and his commitment to success is second to none. He has had the misfortune to endure many serious injuries throughout his career and these alone have been his limitation to what would otherwise have been global honours and success. In true Dean Macey fashion these episodes have forged Dean's determinent as a problem-solver and as a man who is ready to learn from his own adversities and he is someone who has 'been there and done it' and by that I mean both in success and in the experience of non-participation due to injury. One does not think of Dean without thinking of exuberance, determination and thoroughness, his personality is his character. I know that Dean is someone to whom I would entrust any of my patients for a precise and challenging rehabilitation programme and indeed a person who's personal training would be anything but 'routine'.”

“I first met Dean at the world junior championships in Sydney back in 1996 where we both won medals against the odds. What stayed with me from that competition is the way in which Dean competes, one goal, one mission! But after each event he would switch to ‘social’ mode and was fun and reliable guy to be around. This stuck with me and was one of the main reasons from my side to start training with Dean in 2001. I came over every month to the UK and Dean (as was his whole family) were great in making me feel comfortable and at home. We had good and bad times, both in training and competition but Dean would never give in no matter how far down on his luck he was (and Dean has been a very unlucky man on the track). There was always a little spark that kept firing the engine, whether it be with a laugh or a tear. I will always remember Dean as the most persevering, physically talented, very proud, honest and supremely motivated decathlete to have ever set foot on a track. It has been a privilege and a great time.”
